Catherine the burlesque queen

A recently digitised photo of Catherine Bartho, billed as “the first Russian ballerina” to visit Australia, has led me to the American Library of Congress where there is wonderful footage of Bartho, then called Catarina Bartho, dancing against a backdrop of Niagara Falls in a dance that merges ballet with burlesque style dancing of the late 19th century. Bartho – her father was British – did not leave Australia to dance in Italy, as previously written, but to take up a career as a burlesque dancer in New York before she returned to Moscow to teach dance. In Australia, under her Anglicised name, she danced in the ballet Turquoisette, sub titled a Study in Blue.
