The long journey of Stevenson’s Cinderella, from Washington DC to Brisbane, Australia

It’s a big day today for Li Cunxin with the premiere of the Queensland Ballet’s first mainstage season under his artistic direction.

Li chose Cinderella, choreographed by Ben Stevenson, his former mentor, for this landmark season.

The production begins its run tonight at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre.

In the clip below, Stevenson indicates that he began to choreograph his production 45 years ago however its world premiere took place 43 years ago in Washington DC in 1970.

Sets were by Edward Haynes, costumes by Norman McDowell and leading roles were shared by two couples – Gaye Fulton and Desmond Kelly, and Marilyn Burr and Ivan Nagy.

The Queensland Ballet has commissioned new sets (Thomas Boyd) and costumes (Tracy Grant Lord) for the Australian season.
