McGregor’s Rite of Spring postponed due to attack on Sergei Filin
A major highlight of the Bolshoi Ballet’s year was to be Wayne McGregor’s new Rite of Spring in Moscow this April.
The production would celebrate the 100th anniversary of Nijinsky’s Rite of Spring.
The ballet was to be shown on cinema screens throughout Australia in May, as part of a Bolshoi Ballet series of films distributed by Sharmill Films, and in approximately 300 cinemas in the United States, on April 21 as part of the Emerging Pictures’s Ballet in Cinema series.
Broadway World has just reported the postponement, quoting part of the official release from the Bolshoi:
“The Directorship of the Bolshoi theatre of Russia, with the production crew headed by the choreographer Wayne McGregor, has come to a joint decision to postpone the production of ‘The Rite of Spring’ due to the fact that the artistic director of the ballet company of the Bolshoi theatre of Russia, Mr Sergei Filin, is hospitalized.
“The date of the production will be determined after the artistic director of the ballet returns back to the theatre.”
