Royal New Zealand Ballet’s new music director

The Sydney-born Nigel Gaynor, who worked with the Australian Ballet for 15 years, has been appointed music director of the Royal New Zealand Ballet.

He takes up the position in January next year.

Gaynor is someone any dancer would like to have at the piano for class. He has released 10 CDs of ballet class music, and they’re among the best on the market.

He trained at the Conservatorium of Music in Sydney, has worked with English National Ballet and the Royal Ballet, and joined Northern Ballet as assistant music director in 1998.

Ethan Stiefel, artistic director of RNZB said: “To have someone leading the RNZB music department, with the extensive ballet experience, versatility and expertise that Nigel Gaynor possesses, is certain to enhance the quality and consistency of all of our artistic endeavours. I couldn’t be more excited to begin collaborating with Nigel and I know the rest of the organisation shares my enthusiasm”.
