Li Cunxin, artistic director of the Queensland Ballet, reveals the 2018 season

The Queensland Ballet’s 2018 season is strong on narrative ballets, with the first, a new production of La Bayadere, choreographed by the company’s ballet master, Greg Horsman.

This Bayadere, premiering in March, is a QB co-production with the West Australian Ballet and Royal Winnipeg Ballet.

Gary Harris is the set designer and Jon Buswell the lighting designer.

In May-June, a double bill, Carmen & Firebird, will showcase the choreography of Carlos Acosta and the Queensland Ballet’s artistic associate, Liam Scarlett.

As Carmen and the Firebird are almost always dressed in red, the double bill could be subtitled “the ladies in red”.

Acosta’s Carmen was choreographed for the Royal Ballet in 2015 while Liam Scarlett’s Firebird was choreographed for the Norwegian National Ballet in 2013.

(It’s interesting that Scarlett also choreographed a production of Carmen for the Norwegian National Ballet in 2015).

The Queensland Ballet’s production of Midsummer Night’s Dream, also choreographed by Scarlett, will tour to Melbourne in October.

The 2018 season includes three ballets by Ben Stevenson – Cinderella, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker.

Swan Lake will tour throughout Queensland in June and July.

Cinderella, first performed by the QB five years ago, will return in September next year and The Nutcracker will be back for its traditional Christmas season.

This year the company launched Bespoke, a season described as “an intersection of art forms”.

It will return next year with works by QB dancer, Jack Lister, guest choreographer, Gabrielle Nankivell and a collaboration with Expressions Dance Company.
