Queensland Ballet: Joiners and leavers

Two dancers from the National Ballet of Cuba are to join the Queensland Ballet next year. Yanela Pinera will become a principal artist and Camilo Ramos will be a soloist.

The Queensland Ballet has also announced that the principal artist, Natasha Kusch, who joined the company in August 2013, will be leaving the company and the principal, Matthew Lawrence, will retire on 23 December after his final performance in The Nutcracker.

Lawrence, born in New Zealand, trained at the Australian Ballet School and joined the Australian Ballet where he rose to become a principal aged 27 in 2004.

After 11 years with the company he joined Birmingham Royal Ballet before returning to Australia to take up his position at the Queensland Ballet where this year he danced with guest artist, Tamara Rojo, in Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo & Juliet.

Other dancers leaving the Queensland Ballet are Nathan Scicluna, a soloist who joined the company in 2005, and Joseph Stewart.

Those joining the company are Neneka Yoshida and Nathan Brook while Alexander Idaszak is re-joining the company following a year at the Royal New Zealand Ballet.
