Sergei Polunin, from his student years, to the Royal Ballet, to Take Me to Church and now a father

I first saw Sergei Polunin at the White Lodge Royal Ballet School where he danced in The Sleeping Beauty’s pas de trois  in Act 1.

He was only 13 at the time but it was clear he could have an exceptional career within a few years.

In 2010, aged 20, Sergei became the youngest every principal dancer in the Royal Ballet.

Two years later he walked out of a rehearsal in one of the Royal Ballet’s studios and never returned to the company.

His roller coaster life as a freelancer wasn’t always easy but I hope he continues to dance and enjoy a new life now that he, and his partner, Elena Ilinykh, have a new baby boy.

The photo of Polunin and his son was taken by Stephanie Pistel.

Here’s a video of Polunin on stage in Le Corsaire.
